WHAT IS AN EKG TEST?

EKG Test printed results
EKG Test (Electrocardiogram or ECG) is a test that records the electrical activities of your heart. It's a non-invasive and painless method to quickly determine your heart's condition.

An electrical impulse travels through your heart with each beat it makes. This impulse prompts your heart to pump blood. The purpose of the electrocardiogram is to measure and record these electrical impulses to determine if your heart is healthy or not.

WHEN DO YOU NEED AN EKG TEST?

An EKG is not done just because you want to. Although it is not harmful, it can sometimes show abnormalities that are NOT caused by heart disease. This creates unnecessary anxiety and may lead to tests and treatments that you do not need. Always consult with your physician first. They will let you know if you need to undergo an EKG.

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE FOR AN EKG TEST?

There are no restrictions on food and drink before an EKG. However, it is advised that you do not smoke before the test. Avoid applying lotions, creams, or oils on the day of the test. These things might keep the electrodes from making contact with your skin. It is also best if you wear clothes that can be easily removed, as the EKG electrodes will be attached to your legs and chest.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ELECTROCARDIOGRAM OR EKG TEST?

During an EKG, a professional lab technician will attach about 10-15 electrodes with adhesive pads to the skin on your chest, arms, and legs. You'll be asked to lie flat, while a computer generates a graph of the electrical impulses that move through your heart. The test will usually take 5 to 10 minutes.

3 MAIN TYPES OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM OR EKG TEST

Resting EKG Test

This is the most common diagnostic test requested by physicians. It is done while you are lying down in a comfortable position. However, you must not move because it may affect the impulses generated by your heart. It will take 5 to 10 minutes.

Exercise EKG Test

As the name implies, this type of EKG is done while the patient is exercising. You may be asked to pedal on an exercise bike or walk on a treadmill while the electrodes are hooked up to you. An exercise EKG helps determine what kind of treatment would suit you if you have heart conditions. It also helps to find symptoms that might only occur during physical activity. This takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

Ambulatory EKG Test

During an ambulatory EKG, you'll be asked to wear a portable recording device for 24 to 48 hours. This device will read the electrical activities of your heart. This is performed if your doctor suspects that you have palpitations or abnormal heart rhythm. It is also used by patients who are recovering from a heart attack to monitor the functions of their hearts.
